Markteinführung

Vorgestellt auf der AppleWorld Conference in Los Angeles am 2. März 1987, zusammen mit dem Macintosh II. Er war der erste kompakte Mac mit Lüfter und mit einem internen Erweiterungssteckplatz (SE PDS) für Beschleuniger-, Netzwerk- oder Grafikkarten. Die Produktion lief bis zum 1. August 1989 (EveryMac).

Marketing

Er führte die ADB-Anschlüsse für Tastatur und Maus ein (vom Apple IIGS geerbt) und bot ab Werk eine interne SCSI-Festplatte; die Version mit HD20 kostete 3.900 USD. Im August 1989 wurden die Diskettenlaufwerke auf SuperDrive FDHD mit 1,44 MB und MS-DOS-Kompatibilität umgestellt.

Mängel und Lösungen

Das vom Plus geerbte Gehäuse begrenzte Belüftung und Platz für den Steckplatz, und die ersten Einheiten kamen ohne Lüfter aus, mit den bekannten Hitze-Problemen. Der SE FDHD löste ihn ab, bis 1989 der SE/30 kam; der ursprüngliche SE wurde am 15. Oktober 1990 eingestellt.
