Mac OS X Server 10.0

On May 21, 2001, at WWDC, Apple introduced a new Mac OS X Server on the contemporary Mac OS X foundation and announced it available to buy. This is the Server 10.0 generation, distinct from the 1999 product. In his original review of 10.0.4, Mel Beckman described the adoption of Aqua, visually reuniting server and desktop.

Apple integrated Apache, Samba for Windows file sharing, WebObjects 5, and QuickTime Streaming Server 3. It added WebDAV collaborative publishing, SMTP/IMAP/POP mail, DHCP, DNS, IP filtering, NetInfo, and LDAP directories. Macintosh Manager and NetBoot aimed to centralize client configurations. Those component versions should not automatically be assigned to the 1999 edition.

US editions cost 499 USD for ten clients and 999 USD for unlimited clients; the license expansion cost 499 USD. The announced ten-client limit concerned simultaneous file sharing with up to ten Macintosh clients, not ten website visitors. Apple listed Server G4, Power Mac G4, G4 Cube, iMac, Server G3, and Power Macintosh G3, with 128 MB RAM and 4 GB free space.

Beckman's review examined 10.0.4, not necessarily the first media sold in May. He valued the new tools but criticized incomplete documentation and graphical controls. For example, Server Admin could turn DNS on but not configure it. This page retains that criticism as its author's assessment of that version. The next documented step in this batch is Server 10.1, available according to Apple on September 25.
