Apple dates macOS Server 5.4 to September 25, 2017, for macOS High Sierra 10.13. Its administrator documentation confirms that file sharing, caching and Time Machine backups move into the underlying system; Xcode Server moves into Xcode 9. Leaving Server app does not mean all those functions disappear from the Mac.

The same Apple guide distinguishes removals from interface changes: upgrading removes FTP, file sharing with iOS devices can no longer be configured, and Open Directory is hidden in new installations. Apple also says AFP cannot share APFS volumes and points to SMB for those volumes. Open Directory is not described as removed.

In TidBITS on September 26, Agen Schmitz noted APFS support, new Profile Manager options and the need to install the update manually. His note listed US $19.99 for new purchases and a free update. Writing on OWC's blog in October, Steve Sande warned that service changes should be reviewed before upgrading. These are attributed contemporary descriptions, not current installation advice.

Apple's security note records FreeRADIUS 2.2.10 and Postfix 3.2.2 fixes in 5.4; the Postfix entry was added on October 31, 2017. That documentation addition date is not treated as another Server release. This entry covers 5.4 without inventing dates or requirements for later versions.
