The announcement included topic-based Siri search, a dark appearance, Memories in Photos and a redesigned Apple Music interface. It also described text entry from nearby iOS devices and automatic universal-app downloads. Features varied by region, language and supported app; paid services did not become free with the system update.

ReplayKit, PhotoKit and HomeKit expanded developer tools, while Game Center supported up to four controllers. That did not guarantee every app used them. The planned autumn system release did not prove every announced service arrived on the same day.

On December 6, 2016, MacRumors' Juli Clover reported activation of single sign-on for participating US providers and apps on tvOS 10 without requiring a beta. This is separate from tvOS 10.1, dated December 12 by Apple. The service is not backdated to September or presented as worldwide or subscription-free.
