tvOS 17

Apple previewed the tvOS 17 beta on June 5, 2023, and released the free update on September 18 for Apple TV HD and Apple TV 4K. FaceTime reached the television, but the launch announcement limited it to second- and third-generation Apple TV 4K: system compatibility does not mean every feature works on every model.

FaceTime used an iPhone or iPad camera and microphone through Continuity Camera. Calls could start on the television or move there from a personal device. In June Apple explained Split View for seeing participants during SharePlay and incoming-call notifications that did not reveal the caller on the shared screen.

The redesigned Control Center showed time and active profile. The iPhone locator targeted second-generation or later Siri Remote, not every older remote. At launch Enhance Dialogue was described with Apple TV 4K and second-generation HomePod; camera-based Apple Music Sing required third-generation 4K and a music subscription.

Apple also announced APIs for third-party VPN and Continuity Camera conferencing apps. Even in September, Webex and Zoom were planned for later that year, not already published by the tvOS announcement. The table separates those commitments from verified version dates, without builds or an unverified complete history.
