watchOS 9

Apple previewed watchOS 9 on June 6, 2022, and released it on September 12. The free update started at Series 4, excluding Series 3, and required iPhone 8 or later or second-generation iPhone SE or later with iOS 16. A new watch sales date does not replace the software release date.

Sleep added estimates of REM, Core and Deep stages alongside awake time. Medications logged doses and schedules; US interaction alerts were neither medical advice nor worldwide availability. AFib History was intended for people aged 22 or older with a prior diagnosis, subject to local clearances.

Workout added heart rate zones, custom intervals and Multisport. A redesigned Compass did not give every compatible watch every function: notes limited Waypoints and Backtrack to SE and Series 6 or later. The register separates 9.0.1, released only for Apple Watch Ultra.

Notes place Race Route and track detection in 9.2, the latter initially in the US. 9.6.1 fixed motion-data access for apps using the Movement Disorder API. In 2026, 9.6.4 extended the certificate for certain services after January 2027, not a new health feature.
