The store model as a marketing formula
Apple opened its first own store on May 19, 2001 in Tysons Corner, Virginia. The project was led by Ron Johnson, hired in January 2000, who also drove the Genius Bar, the tech-support counter that became a store hallmark.

Design as a showcase: open tables, products you can touch, glass facades. Some stores have become architectural landmarks: the Fifth Avenue cube (2006), the Pudong cylinder (2010) or the floating dome of Marina Bay Sands (2020).

A model others wanted to copy
The Apple Store model expanded internationally through Apple’s own stores, as the Ginza, Regent Street and BKC milestones documented here show. That expansion should not be confused with imitation by others. Attention to design reached small details: Business Insider, citing Walter Isaacson’s biography, recalls Jobs spending thirty minutes on the shade of grey for restroom signs.

In July 2011, an American blogger living in Kunming, China, revealed a fake "Apple Store" that copied the winding staircase, the blue T-shirts and the employees' lanyards; several staff members genuinely believed they worked for Apple. After the publicity, officials found five fake stores in the city and closed two for lacking a business licence; at the time, China's only official Apple Stores were in Beijing and Shanghai.
