Launch and context
Apple introduced it on June 5, 2023. Initial sales began in the US on February 2, 2024 with preorders from January 19, not a simultaneous worldwide launch. It started at $3,499 with 256 GB, also offering 512 GB and 1 TB. ZEISS Optical Inserts were sold separately: $99 for readers or $149 for supported prescriptions at that launch. This configuration is the original M2/R1, not a later revision. [vp-announce, vp-sale, vp-spec]
How Apple presented it
Apple presented spatial computing: visionOS windows and content placed in the environment. Two micro-OLED displays totaled 23 million pixels. M2 handled general computing while R1 processed cameras, sensors and microphones for tracking and the rendered surroundings. The world was not viewed through transparent glass; cameras showed it on displays. EyeSight was an outward representation of the eyes. The headset weighed 600-650 grams depending on fit; its external battery allowed up to 2 hours of general use or 2.5 hours of video under Apple testing, with use possible while plugged in. Documented issues
The Verge praised the displays but found compromises in weight, social isolation, gaze input and camera-based surroundings. In low light the environment video could lose sharpness and show noise; it was not direct vision. These original-test observations neither establish a failure rate nor explain sales on their own. Apple specifies ages 13 and up, breaks and stopping for motion sickness; running or driving with the headset is inappropriate. For persistent or severe symptoms it recommends medical advice. Current safety guidance does not make recent visionOS functions launch capabilities. [vp-review, vp-safety, vp-motion]
