Changes from Lightning 2022
Compared with the 2022 Lightning set, the case changes to USB-C and earbuds and case move from IPX4 to IP54, adding dust resistance under laboratory conditions. This is not permanent protection or permission to submerge them. The announcement also promised 20-bit/48 kHz Lossless Audio and ultra-low latency for this revision when connected to Apple Vision Pro once it reached the market, not a universal Bluetooth upgrade or a feature available with every device in September 2023. H2 in the earbuds and U1 in the case remain.
Features and battery life
The set retains Active Noise Cancellation, Transparency mode, Adaptive EQ, Personalized Spatial Audio with head tracking and swipe volume control on the stem. It includes four ear-tip sizes XS, S, M and L, Bluetooth 5.3, case speaker and lanyard loop, and a USB-C charging cable. The case charges through USB-C, MagSafe, Qi or an Apple Watch charger. Apple’s August 2023 testing supported up to 6 hours of listening with cancellation and up to 30 with case recharges, not a guarantee for every use or an aged battery.
Software and illustration
Adaptive Audio, Conversation Awareness and Personalized Volume arrived with iOS 17 on the 2022 Lightning Pro 2 too; they do not make USB-C a new generation. The current technical page includes later hearing features and other software improvements, which are not presented as September 2023 launch features here. The illustration is an original schematic recreation of the case front, proportioned to its 60.6 × 45.2 mm dimensions. It is not a photograph, does not show the earbuds and does not reveal the USB-C connector.
