Launch
Apple introduced the redesigned AirPort Extreme on June 10, 2013, announcing availability that day for $199 in the US. The new base station adopted a vertical 98 × 98 × 168 mm body, unlike the earlier flat generations.
Design and connection
It supported simultaneous dual-band 2.4 and 5 GHz Wi-Fi using 802.11a/b/g/n/ac and a six-element beamforming antenna array. Apple advertised a maximum 802.11ac data rate of 1.3 Gb/s, not a guaranteed Internet speed.
Requirements and photograph
It had one Gigabit Ethernet WAN port, three Gigabit Ethernet LAN ports and USB 2 for a printer or external drive. Unlike AirPort Time Capsule, it did not include an internal disk. Setup required AirPort Utility 6.3 with OS X Lion 10.7.5 or later, or AirPort Utility 1.3 with iOS 6 or later. Those administration requirements did not restrict Wi-Fi access to those operating systems.
