Apple Personal Modem
The Apple Personal Modem is a compact external modem that plugs directly into a mains socket. Apple's original M2244 data sheet, dated March 1987, presents it for communications with Macintosh, Apple II and other computers with an RS-232 interface. The sheet's date documents the product, not its launch or first day of sale.

Model and documentation
The Apple Personal Modem is a compact external modem that plugs directly into a mains socket. Apple's original M2244 data sheet, dated March 1987, presents it for communications with Macintosh, Apple II and other computers with an RS-232 interface. The sheet's date documents the product, not its launch or first day of sale.
Rates and protocols
Apple specifies a high speed of 1200 baud and a low range from 0 to 300. The format is asynchronous, with seven or eight data bits, one or two stop bits and several parity choices; the sheet describes full duplex with echo. Dialling, redialling and answering can be automatic or manual, with tone or pulse telephone support. It is not a broadband modem or an Ethernet interface.
Connections and use
The data connection is an RS-232-C eight-pin mini-circular socket. Two RJ-11 jacks connect the line and a telephone. The mains plug head detaches, and the sheet gives separate dimensions for body and head. Volume is adjustable and status messages appear on the computer screen. The service manual treats the body as a replaceable unit, rather than supplying component schematics here.
Order and software
The sheet lists the modem, RJ-11 telephone cord, guide and documents in order A9M0334. The appropriate interface cable and communications software are requirements, not one universal bundled cable. Apple names MacTerminal, Access II and Hayes-compatible programs; remote banking, shopping and information are proposed uses, not services supplied by the modem. The image is an original functional diagram, not a photograph or enclosure drawing.
