iPod (2G) (2002)
On July 17, 2002 Apple introduced the range that brought iPod to Windows. This record covers the 10 and 20 GB Touch Wheel models, identified by Apple as second generation and A1019: the wheel did not physically turn, and the FireWire port had a cover. US prices were $399 and $499. The $299 5 GB model announced alongside them must not be confused with these Touch Wheel models.

Marketing, controls and accessories
The presentation focused on a wider audience: Steve Jobs highlighted bringing iPod to Windows users. This was not yet iTunes for Windows: that version included MUSICMATCH Jukebox, with Auto-sync or manual song and playlist transfers. Mac included iTunes 3. Apple advertised up to ten hours of music and FireWire charging, not USB. Both 10 and 20 GB included a case and wired remote as well as earbuds, power adapter and FireWire cable.
Availability, evolution and photograph
July’s announcement scheduled Mac availability for early August and Windows for late August; the September 3 release described both as shipping. That day Apple announced Best Buy availability for September 15, a retail expansion rather than the original introduction date. FHKE’s photo shows a second-generation example without proving its capacity. Compare the 2001 iPod and 2003 3G, which moved four buttons above the wheel and added a dock connector.
