Launch
Apple unveiled it on October 12, 2005, in San Jose: the fifth iPod, with a 2.5-inch color screen able to play video alongside music and photos, in 30 GB ($299) and 60 GB ($399) models in white or black, per its press release. Jobs described it as 30 percent thinner with 50 percent more capacity than its predecessor at the same price. It was the first iPod to play video, as Wikipedia records, and it arrived with iTunes 6, which began selling video: about 2,000 music videos, Pixar shorts and five ABC and Disney Channel series, including Lost and Desperate Housewives, per Apple. · Apple (2005-10-12)
Marketing
Video turned the iPod into a pocket device for more than music: video podcasts, home movies and TV shows bought by the episode, all synced over USB 2.0 with Auto-Sync, per Apple's release. On September 12, 2006, a revision brought a brighter screen and an 80 GB model replacing the 60 GB, with a $50 price cut across the range, per Wikipedia. · Apple (2005-10-12)
Flaws and fixes
Apple rated battery life at up to 14 hours of music on the 30 GB model and 20 on the 60 GB, and the 2006 revision improved video playback time, per Wikipedia. On September 5, 2007, the line was renamed iPod classic with a metal body, per the same source. · Apple (2005-10-12)
