Introduction and capacities
Apple introduced the second-generation iPod mini on February 23, 2005, and announced immediate worldwide availability: 4 GB for $199 and 6 GB for $249 in the United States. Both came in silver, pink, blue and green. This page covers both capacities of the same generation, not two separate products.
Battery life and connections
It retained the Click Wheel and the 1.67-inch monochrome LCD with 138 × 110 pixels. Apple claimed up to 18 hours of playback, compared with eight for the original mini. These are manufacturer battery-life claims, dependent on use and settings. The Dock connector supported USB 2.0 syncing and charging; FireWire required an optional cable. It supported Apple Lossless alongside AAC, MP3, Audible, AIFF and WAV.
Identification and limits
Apple identifies both generations as A1051, so that number alone does not distinguish them. On the second generation, capacity is engraved on the back and the Click Wheel lettering matches the case color. The box included earphones, a belt clip, a USB 2.0 cable and iTunes software, but no power adapter; the optional USB adapter cost $29 in the United States. Apple warned that rechargeable batteries had a limited number of charge cycles. The photo shows a blue second-generation mini, not all the colors or a launch image.
