Introduction and format
Apple introduced the second-generation iPod nano on September 12, 2006 and announced immediate worldwide availability. It adopted an aluminum enclosure while retaining the Click Wheel and 30-pin connector. This is not the original 2005 nano.
Capacity, price and use
The initial range tied capacity to color: silver 2 GB for $149; silver, pink, green or blue 4 GB for $199; and black 8 GB for $249, all US prices. Apple advertised up to 24 hours of music, depending on use and settings. Search, Quick Scroll and gapless playback were added.
Editions, compatibility and photograph
The red 4 GB (PRODUCT) RED edition arrived on October 13 for $199. On November 3 Apple announced an 8 GB version for $249, available online that day and in retail stores that weekend. Apple pledged $10 per RED nano to the Global Fund. This describes the announced pledge, not an audit of donations.
Earbuds and a USB 2.0 cable were included; the dock was optional. The photo shows the blue model on a dock. The initial announcement required iTunes 7, USB 2.0 and Mac OS X 10.3.9 or later, or Windows 2000 SP4/XP SP2. It also documented support for Nike + iPod and voice-recording accessories.
