Introduction and format
Apple introduced the second-generation iPod shuffle on September 12, 2006: an aluminum body with a built-in clip, 1 GB and a US launch price of $79. The announcement expected October availability. That forecast must not be confused with arrival in stores.
Capacity, price and use
Apple’s October 31 release set retail availability for Friday, November 3. The UK price was £55 including VAT. A January 2007 release described the initial shipments three months earlier. The chronology separates introduction, forecast and availability announcement.
Editions, compatibility and photograph
Users could choose random or in-order playback. Apple advertised up to 12 hours of battery life, depending on use and settings. It connected to a computer through the included dock; earbuds were also supplied. The availability release required iTunes 7.0.2, USB 2.0 and Mac OS X 10.3.9 or later, or Windows 2000 SP4/XP SP2.
On January 30, 2007 Apple added blue, pink, green and orange to the original silver, retaining 1 GB and the $79 US price. The photo shows a green example of this generation with its dock, not the original 2006 launch finish.
