Announcement and design
Apple announced the fifth-generation iPod touch on September 12, 2012, with pre-orders from September 14 and announced availability in October. The initial 32 and 64 GB models cost $299 and $399 in the United States. The anodized-aluminum body was about 6 mm thick and weighed 88 grams according to the statement.
Cameras and Lightning
The dual-core A5 chip accompanied a four-inch Retina display, iOS 6 and Siri. Initial models had a five-megapixel iSight camera with 1080p video, video stabilization and LED flash, plus a FaceTime camera. The Lightning connector and iPod touch loop wrist strap were part of the redesign; Apple advertised up to 40 hours of music or eight of video, depending on use and settings.
16 GB variants
The mid-2013 16 GB variant should not be confused with the initial models: its technical sheet lists only the FaceTime HD camera, not the rear iSight. On June 26, 2014 Apple announced a 16 GB version with iSight and colors for $199 in the US, and reduced 32 and 64 GB to $249 and $299. These revisions belong to this generation; the photo shows a pink variant with a rear camera and loop attachment, not the 2013 16 GB model.
