Launch
Apple announced it on July 27, 2010 by press release, without a keynote: $999 with availability announced for September, per the release itself. That day, per MacRumors' report, the 24-inch model dropped from $899 to $799 on its way out and the 30-inch Cinema HD stayed at $1,799 while supplies lasted.
Marketing
The release presented it with 60 percent more pixels of workspace than the 24-inch model and, in Phil Schiller's words, as an ideal companion for MacBooks and a "perfect fit" with the new Mac Pro, able to expand an iMac's workspace. It brought the family an ambient light sensor adjusting brightness automatically, and kept the line's environmental credentials: Energy Star 5.0, EPEAT Gold, mercury- and PVC-free.
Flaws and fixes
It required a Mac with Mini DisplayPort, per the release. Apple announced the Thunderbolt Display on July 20, 2011, but the LED Cinema Display remained on sale until supplies ran out, per EveryMac. No exact discontinuation date is claimed here.
