Launch
Apple introduced the first Mac Pro at WWDC in San Francisco on August 7, 2006. It announced shipping that day for the $2,499 US standard configuration, with two 2.66 GHz dual-core Xeon processors: four cores in total, not four processors.
Configuration and use
The standard configuration included 1 GB of 667 MHz fully buffered DDR2 ECC memory, expandable to 16 GB, a 250 GB 7200 rpm SATA drive, GeForce 7300 GT with 256 MB and a 16x double-layer SuperDrive. It offered four PCI Express slots and four drive bays; Apple’s 2 TB figure required four optional 500 GB drives, not the standard configuration.
Context and photograph
AirPort Extreme and Bluetooth 2.0+EDR were options, not standard wireless features. Apple presented Mac Pro as completing the Mac family’s transition to Intel. Evan Sims’s original photo is dated August 11, 2006 and shows the tower without identifying its internal configuration.
