Launch
Apple introduced it in December 1983 at USD 2,995, after FCC rules forced a name change for the revised model. It was discontinued in September 1985; the III and III Plus together sold about 120,000 units.
Marketing
It came standard with the real-time clock, video interlacing, standardized rear connectors, a 55-watt power supply, 256 KB of RAM and a redesigned Apple IIe-style keyboard. III owners could buy an upgrade kit fitted by an authorized technician.
Flaws and fixes
It inherited the Apple III's bad reputation and arrived late: the Apple II kept selling and the Macintosh was weeks away. Apple II emulation stayed limited to 48 KB, and its DB-25 disk port needed an adapter for Disk III drives.
