Launch and context
Announced on September 12, 2017, orders opened on September 15 and availability began September 22 in initial markets. Capacities were 32 GB for $179 or 64 GB for $199 in the US. The 64-bit A10X Fusion powered the step beyond the 1080p Apple TV. The box measured 35 × 98 × 98 mm and weighed 425 g. These configurations belong to the first 4K generation, not later models. How Apple presented it
Apple centered the presentation on Dolby Vision and HDR10, alongside iTunes films in 4K HDR and upgrades of HD titles when versions became available. HDMI 2.0a, Gigabit Ethernet and 802.11ac Wi-Fi with MIMO connected the box; the remote had a touch surface, Siri microphones and Lightning charging. 4K resolution and dynamic range depended on compatible television, content and connection. Documented issues
The Verge's September 2017 test criticized forced conversion of SDR content into the selected HDR output and the absence of automatic format switching. It also noted no Dolby Atmos or YouTube 4K in launch software. Apple's cumulative specification does list Atmos, evidence of later evolution rather than September 2017 availability.
