Launch and context
Apple announced it on October 13, 2020. Orders began on November 6, with availability planned for the week of November 16 in initial markets, including Spain. US pricing was $99, with white and space gray as the original colors. That launch is distinct from later additions of colors or features. [mini-launch]
How Apple presented it
S5 analyzed music and adjusted loudness, dynamic range and driver movement in real time. One full-range driver and two passive radiators directed sound down and around the base. Three microphones listened for Siri, while a fourth facing inward helped isolate playback. Intercom sent voice messages to other HomePod speakers and compatible devices; it was not a continuous room-to-room call. Apple connected the proposition to HomeKit, music and multiple-speaker use. Documented issues
The Verge liked its sound for its size but found less bass, volume and presence than larger speakers at similar prices: a 2020 test judgment, not a manufacturing fault. A stereo pair needs two minis, not a mini and a larger HomePod. Temperature and humidity readings were activated with software 16.3 in January 2023, rather than available in 2020. Apple specifies initial calibration and an optimal range around 15-30 °C and 30-70% relative humidity; prolonged loud playback can reduce accuracy. [mini-review, mini-spec, mini163]
