Launch
Announced on 31 August 2004 at the Apple Expo in Paris and shipped in September, in three configurations from USD 1,299. After 2005 revisions (more memory, Gigabit Ethernet, then a built-in iSight with a Front Row remote), it was replaced by the Intel iMac in January 2006.
Marketing
Advertising tied it to the iPod, by then Apple's star product: 'From the creators of iPod.' Apple chased the halo effect to bring iPod users to the Mac, and its quiet white design with three cooling zones was widely praised.
Flaws and fixes
Critics noted the lack of screen height adjustment, the rear-only ports and the 256 MB of base memory. Early units suffered failing capacitors and power supplies, leading to an Apple repair program.
