Launch

Announced on 7 September 2016 at the Bill Graham Civic Auditorium in San Francisco, with pre-orders on 9 September and release on 16 September, from USD 769 (32 GB). The glossy jet black finish was exclusive to the 128 and 256 GB models, and a (PRODUCT)RED version followed in March 2017. It was discontinued on 10 September 2019 with the arrival of the iPhone 11.

Marketing

Its star feature was the dual camera: an f/1.8 wide angle with optical stabilization plus an f/2.8 telephoto for 2× optical zoom, with the Portrait bokeh mode arriving exclusively in iOS 10.1. The Home button became capacitive with the Taptic Engine, and the jet black finish grabbed attention despite its delicacy.

Flaws and fixes

The removal of the 3.5 mm jack was heavily criticized (Phil Schiller defended it as 'courage' and a SumOfUs petition passed 300,000 signatures). Some units suffered the audio fault ('loop disease') and others the 'No service' error, which Apple repaired free for 4 years; in 2025 Apple agreed to pay USD 35 million in a class action over the audio issue. iOS 16 (2022) dropped support.
