Launch
Announced on 12 September 2017 at the Steve Jobs Theater, alongside the iPhone 8 and iPhone X, and released on 22 September from USD 799. A (PRODUCT)RED finish followed in April 2018; it was discontinued on 15 April 2020 with the arrival of the iPhone SE (2nd gen).
Marketing
It shared the stage with the iPhone X but was the 'traditional' model: Touch ID, a Home button and the familiar iPhone 6-era design, now with a glass back. Portrait mode with Portrait Lighting (beta) was its star camera feature.
Flaws and fixes
Video recorded only mono audio, and the glass back made repairs pricier. iOS 17 (2023) dropped support, as it did for the iPhone X. Some faulty logic boards led Apple to open a replacement program in 2018.
