Launch
Announced on September 12, 2017 at the Steve Jobs Theater, the first event ever held at Apple Park, presented by Phil Schiller and sharing the stage with the iPhone X; pre-orders opened September 15 and it went on sale September 22 in more than 25 countries, starting at $699 (64 GB; the 8 Plus started at $799). It introduced a glass back with Qi wireless charging, a True Tone Retina HD display and the A11 Bionic chip. A (PRODUCT)RED finish arrived on April 9, 2018, and on April 15, 2020 Apple discontinued it as it unveiled the second-generation iPhone SE, which reused its design.
Marketing
Its slogan: 'A new generation of iPhone.' Schiller called it 'a new generation of iPhone that improves on everything we love about iPhone,' and Apple boasted 'the most durable glass ever in a smartphone.' Alongside the 8 Plus and the X, it was the first iPhone with wireless charging, and it introduced the True Tone display, which matches color to the ambient light.
Flaws and fixes
Units sold between September 2017 and March 2018 in several countries (including the US, China, Japan and Australia) could carry a logic board manufacturing defect causing unexpected restarts, a frozen screen or failure to power on; on August 31, 2018 Apple opened a free logic board replacement program. Its last supported branch is iOS 16; iOS 17 (2023) dropped it.
