Launch
Announced on 9 September 2014 at the Flint Center in Cupertino, presented by Tim Cook; pre-orders from 12 September (over four million in 24 hours, an Apple record) and on sale from 19 September at USD 199, 299 and 399 (16, 64 and, for the first time, 128 GB) on a two-year contract. Ten million iPhone 6 and 6 Plus sold in the first three days, another record, and the iPhone 6 went on to become the best-selling iPhone model to date. The 16 and 64 GB versions were discontinued on 7 September 2016; it returned with 32 GB in 2017 as a budget option and was fully discontinued on 12 September 2018.
Marketing
Its slogan: “Bigger than bigger.” Apple billed it as one of “the biggest advancements in iPhone history”: a new thin anodized aluminum design, a 4.7-inch Retina HD display (1334×750), the A8 chip and, new here, NFC used exclusively for Apple Pay, Apple's payment system debuting on these models.
Flaws and fixes
The chassis could bend under pressure (“Bendgate”); Apple said it had received only nine complaints, called damage from regular use “extremely rare” and offered to replace unintentionally bent phones. The iOS 8.0.1 update knocked out cellular service and Touch ID on many iPhone 6 and 6 Plus units (40,000 affected according to Apple) and was pulled within hours; iOS 8.0.2 fixed it the next day. The initially undocumented “error 53” bricked the phone after certain repairs; Apple resolved it with an iOS 9.2.1 patch on 18 February 2016. The last supported version was iOS 12.5.8; iOS 13 dropped them.
