Launch
Announced on 9 June 2008 at WWDC in San Francisco by Steve Jobs, and on sale from 11 July 2008 in 22 countries (Spain among them), from USD 199 (8 GB) and USD 299 (16 GB) on contract; it reached over 70 countries that year. It sold one million units in its first weekend. The 8 GB model dropped to USD 99 in June 2009 and was discontinued on 7 June 2010.
Marketing
Its slogan said it all: “Twice as fast. Half the price.” It introduced 3G (twice as fast as the original iPhone's EDGE), built-in GPS and iPhone OS 2.0 with the App Store, plus Microsoft Exchange support. It kept the 3.5″ display and a 2 MP camera with no video.
Flaws and fixes
Launch day overloaded Apple's activation servers, leaving buyers unable to activate their phones for hours. iOS 4 (2010) ran very slowly on this model; iOS 4.1 (September 2010) resolved that. The last supported version was iOS 4.2.1 (November 2010).
