Launch
Announced on 4 October 2011 at the “Let's Talk iPhone” event on Apple's campus, Tim Cook's first as CEO; Steve Jobs died the following day. Pre-orders opened on 7 October (one million in 24 hours) and sales began on 14 October at USD 199, 299 and 399 (16, 32 and 64 GB) on contract. A record 4 million in its first weekend. Marketing
“The most amazing iPhone yet.” It debuted the dual-core A5 chip, an 8 MP camera with new optics and 1080p video, and above all Siri, the voice assistant exclusive to this model (the “s” in 4S, in Cook's own words). It shipped with iOS 5 (Notification Center, iMessage) and iCloud.
Flaws and fixes
Battery life fell short of expectations with iOS 5; Apple released iOS 5.1.1 to diagnose and address the issue, though it did not fully resolve it. The last supported version was iOS 9.3.6 (July 2019).
