Launch
Announced on 9 September 2014 alongside the iPhone 6 at the Flint Center in Cupertino, and on sale from 19 September at USD 299, 399 and 499 (16, 64 and 128 GB) on a two-year contract. It shared the 6's records: over four million pre-orders in 24 hours and ten million sold between both models on the first weekend. Permanently discontinued on 7 September 2016 with the iPhone 7's arrival; unlike the 6, it never returned.
Marketing
Under the same “Bigger than bigger.” slogan, it was the first 5.5-inch iPhone (Retina HD, 1920×1080), with the A8 chip, NFC for Apple Pay and an 8-megapixel camera with optical image stabilization, absent from the iPhone 6.
Flaws and fixes
It was the epicenter of “Bendgate”: its longer chassis bent more easily under pressure, and Apple offered to replace unintentionally bent units. A separate problem was “touch disease”: the logic board could flex in normal use and the touchscreen stopped responding, with a flickering grey bar near the top of the display as a symptom; iFixit, which coined the name, linked it to the same lack of rigidity behind “Bendgate”. Apple acknowledged it on 17 November 2016 with a paid repair program for the 6 Plus. Separately, on 21 August 2015 it opened a program for units with a faulty iSight camera (blurry photos, built between September 2014 and January 2015). The last supported version was iOS 12.5.8.
