Launch and context

Introduced at Macworld on January 11, 2005, it was announced as already shipping. It was the first sub-$100 iPod: 512 MB for $99 or 1 GB for $149 in the US. The white body incorporated a USB connector beneath a cap, so connecting to a computer did not require a cable. Earbuds, a neck lanyard and iTunes 4.7.1 were included. [shuffle-launch, shuffle-spec]

How Apple presented it

Apple compared its size and weight to a pack of gum. AutoFill loaded music from an iTunes library or playlist; the rear switch selected ordered or shuffled playback. It also carried computer files as a USB flash drive, sharing capacity with music. Apple estimated 120 or 240 songs and up to 12 hours of playback. iLounge exceeded that endurance in its particular tests, a result from a new sample rather than a guarantee for every unit. Documented issues

The lack of a screen and Click Wheel is a design choice, not a fault: it displays no titles or visual music catalog. LEDs signal playback, transfers, charging and battery status. iLounge praised the simplicity while noting limits for listeners wanting to choose specific tracks. It plays neither photographs nor video. The cited sources establish neither a universal failure rate nor current repair availability. Battery lights indicate charge status, not a complete diagnosis of a collectible unit's internal condition. [shuffle-review, shuffle-spec]
