Launch and context
Announced on September 5, 2007, Apple planned availability for later that month. Ars Technica documented limited store sales before the planned window, making announcement and gradual retail arrival different milestones. Launch configurations were 8 GB for $299 and 16 GB for $399 in the US. The 3.5-inch display had 480 × 320 pixels. [touch-launch, touch-review]
How Apple presented it
Touch controls replaced the Click Wheel. An accelerometer changed orientation and activated Cover Flow; an ambient-light sensor adjusted brightness. Wi-Fi enabled Safari browsing, YouTube and purchases from the iTunes Wi-Fi Music Store, subject to territory. Apple advertised up to 22 hours of audio or 5 of video. Dock and headphone connections were the two bottom ports; external volume buttons were absent. Documented issues
Ars Technica highlighted limits in the original software: no Mail or Notes, and a calendar that displayed synced appointments without creating or editing them. It also reported a negative-black effect on some screens; its own sample did not show it, so the review does not establish a universal defect. Initial maximum capacity of 16 GB was far below the contemporary iPod classic. Wi-Fi and an iPhone-like appearance did not include cellular telephony.
