Launch and configurations

Apple announced the iMac G5 with iSight on October 12, 2005, with availability stated for the following week. The 17-inch base had a 1.9 GHz G5, 160 GB and Radeon X600 Pro 128 MB at $1299; the 20-inch had 2.1 GHz, 250 GB and Radeon X600 XT 128 MB at $1699. Both included 512 MB 533 MHz DDR2 and an 8x double-layer SuperDrive. These announced US prices do not establish immediate delivery.

Evolution and changes

It evolves from May 2005: iSight, Photo Booth, Front Row and Apple Remote arrive; DDR 400 becomes DDR2 533 MHz and maximum memory rises from 2 to 2.5 GB. Radeon 9600 becomes PCI Express X600. The entry 17-inch gains SuperDrive instead of Combo, and the 20-inch falls from $1799 to $1699. Mighty Mouse is included. Apple described a thinner design; a configuration’s maximum measurements are not applied to the entire range.

Features and limits

Resolution remains 1440 × 900 on 17-inch and 1680 × 1050 on 20-inch. AirPort Extreme, Bluetooth 2.0 + EDR and Gigabit Ethernet are standard, with two FireWire 400, three computer USB 2.0 and two keyboard USB 1.1 ports. The USB modem was optional. Tiger and iLife 05 are included; 500 GB was an option, not base storage. The photo identifies iSight, not a verified CPU or size. This is not the 2006 Intel iMac.
