Launch and configurations
Apple announced the iMac G5 at Apple Expo in Paris on August 31, 2004. The computer, power supply and optical drive were integrated into the display on an aluminium foot. The bases were 17-inch 1.6 GHz Combo/80 GB at $1299, 17-inch 1.8 GHz SuperDrive/80 GB at $1499, and 20-inch 1.8 GHz SuperDrive/160 GB at $1899. All had 256 MB 400 MHz DDR and GeForce FX 5200 Ultra graphics with 64 MB. These were announced US prices.
Evolution and changes
Unlike the G4 with its display separate from the base, the G5 put the system behind the panel. Resolution was 1440 × 900 on 17-inch and 1680 × 1050 on 20-inch. Memory supported 2 GB; 250 GB storage was optional, not base. AirPort Extreme and Bluetooth were optional. It had 10/100 Ethernet, a V.92 modem, two FireWire 400 ports, three USB 2.0 ports on the computer and two USB 1.1 on the keyboard. Video outputs required separately sold adapters.
Features and limits
Apple expected worldwide shipping to start in mid-September, not announcement day. Launch software was Mac OS X 10.3 Panther and iLife 04; the later preserved technical page lists iLife 05, not launch equipment. The author identifies the photo as first-generation G5, not a verified CPU or size. This page details 2004; the existing G5 overview stays separate.
