Launch
Apple introduced it on September 20, 1989 and it remained on sale until February 10, 1993. It was the first Mac with a “32-bit clean” ROM and the first Macintosh II with level 2 cache, a PDS slot and built-in video; Apple offered a logic board upgrade to the Quadra 700. Dates and data: EveryMac; the introduction is also recorded in Apple Support and Apple’s Tech Info Library.
Marketing
Successor to the IIcx in the same desktop case: the bus rose from 16 to 25 MHz and video moved onto the logic board, a first for the Macintosh II series. At a launch price of $8,798 in the US it remained aimed at the professional market. (EveryMac.)
Flaws and fixes
Apple documents no model-specific defects in the sources consulted. Limits that do appear in its spec sheet: RAM from 1 MB to 128 MB using 8 30-pin SIMM slots (80 ns); the 512 KB ROM is “32-bit clean”, without the 24-bit addressing limit of the IIx and IIcx.
