Launch

Apple introduced it on March 19, 1990 and it was sold until April 15, 1992. It was the fastest model in the Macintosh II series, partly thanks to then-very-fast RAM in a SIMM format unique to the IIfx, its level-2 cache, and hardware that let applications be optimized for speed. Dates and data: EveryMac; the introduction is also recorded in Apple Support and Apple’s Tech Info Library.

Marketing

The professional top of the line: 68030 at 40 MHz, L2 cache and six NuBus slots, with no built-in video. Its 64-pin SIMMs were not compatible with other Macs, though parity memory was supported. With launch prices of $8,970 to $10,970 in the US depending on configuration, it was the most expensive Mac of its time. (EveryMac.)

Flaws and fixes

Apple documents no model-specific defects in the sources consulted. Limits that do appear in its spec sheet: RAM of 4 MB to 128 MB using 8 64-pin SIMM slots (80 ns), a format used only by this model; 24- or 32-bit addressing; no built-in video.
