Documented features include cut, copy and paste between applications, Spotlight search, Voice Memos and a landscape keyboard in Mail, Messages, Notes and Safari. Not every feature reached all hardware: MMS was limited to iPhone 3G and 3GS and depended on carrier and area; Apple said AT&T would offer it in late summer.

For developers, Apple announced over 1,000 new SDK APIs, including In-App Purchases, a Maps API and accessory interfaces. The push notification service allowed alerts through sounds, text or badges. The API total is Apple's announcement figure, not an independent count or a measurement of use.

Apple specified iTunes 8.2 or later for the update: free for iPhone users and $9.95 for iPod touch. These are US terms from 2009, not a current offer. The iPhone 3GS camera, compass and performance are not attributed to the software. The editorial composition is not a historical screenshot.
