Launch
Announced on September 9, 2015 in San Francisco and released on November 11, from $799 (32 GB, Wi-Fi) to $1,079 (128 GB with cellular). A 12.9-inch display at 2732×2048 (264 ppi), the A9X chip with the M9 motion coprocessor, four speakers and the Smart Connector; the Apple Pencil ($99) and Smart Keyboard ($169) were sold separately. It was discontinued on June 5, 2017, replaced by the second generation.
Marketing
Its slogan: 'Thin. Light. Epic.' Apple introduced it with the Pencil and Smart Keyboard promising 'breakthrough levels of precision and utility,' and Schiller said the A9X 'beats most portable PCs in both CPU and graphics tasks': the message was blunt — this iPad aimed to take on the laptop.
Flaws and fixes
Shortly after launch, some iPad Pros froze with a black screen after charging and only responded to a force restart; Apple acknowledged it with a support document in November 2015 and fixed it in iOS 9.2 (December 2015). It shipped with iOS 9.1 and its last supported branch is iPadOS 16, still receiving point updates in 2026 (16.7.16, May 2026); iPadOS 17 was out of reach over hardware limitations.
