Launch
Apple introduced it on September 7, 2016 at the Bill Graham Civic Auditorium in San Francisco, at Tim Cook’s keynote, and it went on sale on September 16, 2016; it was discontinued on September 12, 2017. It was the first Apple Watch with built-in GPS and 50-meter water resistance, suitable for swimming. Dates and data: Apple Support and EveryMac.
Marketing
The second generation fixed the original’s two big gaps: its own GPS for running without the iPhone, and a swim-proof case (50 m, ISO 22810:2010) with swim tracking; its OLED display doubled brightness to 1,000 nits. There was a ceramic Edition and, from October 28, 2016, the Nike+ edition. Launch price from $369 (38 mm) in the US. (Apple Support, EveryMac.)
Flaws and fixes
Apple documents no model-specific defects in the sources consulted. Limits that do appear in its spec sheet: 512 MB of RAM and 8 GB of storage; the maximum system version is watchOS 6.3 (no watchOS 7 or later); no built-in cellular (mobile data depends on the iPhone); battery rated at about 18 hours by Apple.
