Launch

Apple introduced it on September 7, 2022 (the "Far Out" event) with orders the same day, and it reached stores on September 23, 2022. It was discontinued on September 12, 2023 when Ultra 2 arrived. Dates and data: Apple (newsroom and Apple Support) and EveryMac.

Marketing

Apple created a new category within the watch: a 49 mm titanium case guarding a flat sapphire crystal, the biggest and brightest Apple Watch display yet (2,000 nits), and a customizable Action button in international orange for workouts, compass waypoints or the 86-decibel emergency siren. It debuted dual-frequency GPS (L1 + L5), the most accurate in any Apple Watch, plus durability testing: WR100, EN 13319 for dive accessories (recreational diving to 40 m with the Oceanic+ app) and certification to the relevant aspects of MIL-STD-810H (low pressure/altitude, high and low temperature, temperature shock, sand and dust, shock and vibration, among others); the operating range is -20 °C to 55 °C. Battery up to 36 hours (60 in low power), dual speakers 40 percent louder than Series 8 and three microphones. Three new bands: Trail Loop, Alpine Loop and Ocean Band. $799 in the US. (Apple newsroom, Apple Support, EveryMac.)

Flaws and fixes

Apple documents no model-specific defects in the sources consulted. Limits that do appear in its spec sheet: the dive certification covers recreational scuba to 40 m (it is not a professional dive computer); the Oceanic+ app requires a subscription; battery rated up to 36 hours by Apple (60 h with low-power settings); health measurements are not for medical use; maximum system version watchOS 26.x per EveryMac.
