Launch

Apple introduced it on September 10, 2019 and it reached stores on September 20, 2019; it was discontinued on September 15, 2020. It was the first Apple Watch with an Always-On display and with international emergency calling on GPS + Cellular models. Dates and data: Apple Support and EveryMac.

Marketing

Nearly identical on the outside to the Series 4 it replaced, Series 5 bet on the display: the Always-On Retina keeps the watch face visible without raising your wrist. It added a built-in compass, double the storage (32 GB) and international emergency calling on cellular models. New finishes included titanium and white ceramic alongside aluminum and stainless steel. Launch price from $399 (40 mm, GPS) in the US. (Apple Support, EveryMac.)

Flaws and fixes

Apple documents no model-specific defects in the sources consulted. Limits that do appear in its spec sheet: the maximum system version is watchOS 10 (no watchOS 11 or later); battery rated at about 18 hours by Apple; international emergency calling requires a GPS + Cellular model; Emergency SOS without cellular needs the iPhone nearby or a known Wi-Fi network with Wi-Fi Calling; it requires an iPhone 6s or later with iOS 13 or later.
