Launch
Apple introduced it on September 7, 2022 with orders the same day, and it reached stores on September 16, 2022. It was discontinued on September 12, 2023. Dates and data: Apple (newsroom and Apple Support) and EveryMac.
Marketing
Two health and safety features headlined the launch. First, the temperature sensor with a two-sensor design (one nearest the skin, another under the display to reduce environmental bias): it samples wrist temperature every five seconds during sleep, detecting changes as small as 0.1 °C, and enables retrospective ovulation estimates within Cycle Tracking. Second, Crash Detection: a sensor-fusion algorithm using the highest dynamic range accelerometer in any smartwatch, a new gyroscope, the barometer, GPS and the microphone, trained on data from simulated real-world crashes. It also added international roaming and watchOS 9 Low Power Mode, stretching battery life to 36 hours by disabling the Always-On display and other features. Aluminum in starlight, midnight, silver and (PRODUCT)RED; stainless steel in silver, graphite and gold. From $399 in the US. (Apple newsroom, Apple Support, EveryMac.)
Flaws and fixes
Apple documents no model-specific defects in the sources consulted. Limits that do appear in its spec sheet: battery rated at about 18 hours by Apple; temperature and Blood Oxygen measurements are not for medical use; Low Power Mode requires watchOS 9 and disables the Always-On display; maximum system version watchOS 26.x per EveryMac.
