Launch and context
Announced alongside the 10.5-inch Pro on June 5, 2017, orders opened that day, with deliveries planned for the following week in the first countries. It shipped with iOS 10; iOS 11 was the fall update. The 12.9-inch Retina display offers 2732 × 2048 at 264 ppi, with A10X Fusion and M10. [pro17-launch, pro17-review, pro129-spec]
How Apple presented it
The proposition combined a large workspace, ProMotion up to 120 Hz, True Tone, P3 color and full lamination. Storage: 64, 256 or 512 GB; rear camera 12 MP f/1.8 with optical stabilization and 4K at 30 fps, front 7 MP. Touch ID, four speakers and Smart Connector. Historical US price from $799 for Wi-Fi 64 GB. Pencil and Smart Keyboard were sold separately. [pro17-launch, pro129-spec]
Documented issues
Size: 305.7 × 220.6 × 6.9 mm; weight: 677 g Wi-Fi or 692 g Cellular. It shares a platform with the 10.5-inch, not dimensions, weight or price; a 10.5-inch review does not prove a 12.9-inch failure rate. No endemic model-specific defect is established in the cited sources. If it will not charge, Apple's general guidance is another cable/adapter, suitable temperature and top plus Home until the logo if unresponsive. The cited sources do not establish current availability of support, parts or free repair. The exact photo shows an optional Smart Keyboard. [pro129-spec, ipad-charge]
