Launch
Apple introduced it on June 6, 2022 during the WWDC22 opening keynote; orders opened on July 8 and it began reaching customers on July 15, 2022. It dropped the Air’s classic wedge design for a flat 11.3 mm aluminum chassis with a notch, MagSafe 3 and two new colors: midnight and starlight. Dates: Apple Newsroom press releases (June 6 and July 6, 2022).
Marketing
Apple called it “the world’s best-selling laptop taken to the next level”: a design “strikingly thin from every angle” that cuts volume by 20 percent over the previous model, fanless and completely silent, with a 13.6-inch Liquid Retina display and up to 18 hours of battery life. The new midnight and starlight finishes headlined the campaign. Quotes: Apple Newsroom press release (2022-06-06).
Flaws and fixes
The 256GB base configuration uses a single NAND chip, so its SSD is noticeably slower in read/write than the equivalent M1 model and than higher-capacity configurations (tests published by The Verge, July 2022). The midnight finish also shows fingerprints easily, as several reviews of the time noted. Source: The Verge (2022-07-14).
Indicative price
From USD 1,199 (USD 1,099 education). US launch price per the Apple Newsroom press releases (2022-06-06 and 2022-07-06).
