Announcement and availability

Apple introduced it on June 5, 2023 at the WWDC23 keynote, alongside the Mac Pro with M2 Ultra. It was available to order the same day and availability began June 13, 2023. Apple Newsroom, 05-06-2023

What changes and who it is for

It is the second generation of Mac Studio, the compact desktop between Mac mini and Mac Pro. It keeps the 2022 original's design and moves up to the M2 Max and M2 Ultra chips (new in a Mac Studio): Apple claims up to 3x the performance of the M1 Ultra Mac Studio and up to 6x the most powerful Intel 27-inch iMac; these are Apple test results. With M2 Ultra it supports up to 192GB of unified memory. Apple Newsroom

Before choosing

Memory and GPU configurations differ widely between M2 Max and M2 Ultra: the 192GB maximum does not apply to the base configuration. The front USB-C ports are 10Gb/s on M2 Max and Thunderbolt 4 on M2 Ultra. No display, keyboard or mouse is included. Performance figures compare specific models under Apple's test conditions.
