Announcement and availability

Apple introduced it on March 3, 2026; pre-orders opened on March 4 and it reached stores on March 11, 2026, in 13″ and 15″ models. It replaces the 2025 MacBook Air (M4). Apple Newsroom, 3-3-2026

What changes and who it is for

Three changes over the Air (M4): the M5 chip with a Neural Accelerator in each GPU core for AI features; base storage doubles from 256 to 512 GB with an SSD Apple claims is twice as fast; and the new N1 wireless chip brings Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 6 to the Air. It keeps the modern Air design and supports two external displays. Apple Newsroom

Before choosing

The base configuration has an 8-core GPU; the 10-core GPU is a configure-to-order option. The base price rises $100 over the Air (M4) it replaces, though storage doubles in return (The Verge, 3-3-2026). Fast charging requires a 70 W or higher USB-PD power source, not included.
